Aker’s ownership agenda

Aker’s focus is to maximize value creation in Aker BioMarine over time by developing and positioning the company for global expansion and growth. As an active owner, Aker is open to considering strategic alternatives that can contribute to increased opportunities for the company’s growth and value creation. In February 2024, Aker BioMarine announced that it has initiated a process to explore strategic alternatives for the Feed Ingredients. This business area is the world’s largest krill harvester and producer of krill meal, a premium ingredient that is used in aquaculture feed, pet food and as krill oil for the consumer market. This initiative is in line with Aker’s ambition to maximize value creation for shareholders over time.

Aker owns 77.8 % of the shares in Aker BioMarine.

Krill-based ingredients

Aker BioMarine produces and distributes a product portfolio of a range of krill-derived products for aquaculture, pet food and human consumption. Krill oil for human consumption is sold under the brand Superba. The QRILL Aqua brand has the company’s for aquaculture, while QRILL Pet brand provides ingredients for pet food.

Building global brands

Aker BioMarine owns two brand companies: Lang Pharma Nutrition Inc. and Epion.

Lang is a mass market private label and corporate brand manufacturer specialized within healthcare products. Lang has products for major US retailers, such as Walmart, Target, and CVS Pharmacy.

Aker BioMarine established Epion to build a strong national brand in mass market retail. In 2020, it launched Aker BioMarine’s omega-3 consumer brand, Kori, to major U.S. retailers.

Sustainability in focus since Day 1

Sustainability has been an integral element of Aker BioMarine’s operations and business model since the company’s inception.

Aker BioMarine has received its third consecutive certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for its sustainable Antarctic krill fishery following an independent assessment. The company was initially certified in 2010, being the first krill company to carry the MSC label.

Aker BioMarine maintains an extensive stakeholder collaboration with authorities, science institutions and environmental NGOs engaged in the Antarctic region specifically, as well as the broader community proposing marine resources as an important component into future foods and nutrients.

Aker BioMarine partnered the establishment of the Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund (AWR) to facilitate and promote Antarctic marine ecosystem research. Aker BioMarine reports on climate risks and opportunities in alignment with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD),and tracks progress against its 2030 carbon reduction target.
